As we head into a week where we celebrate being Irish and all things green, as a business it makes us think about how important it is to Shop Irish and Shop Local, not only for our customers but also for us, as a business, to support Irish owned businesses as we select the products that we keep on our shelves and offer online to our customers.
However we ask ourselves what difference does it make?
Lockdown has definitely encouraged us all to Shop Irish and Shop Local, we can’t deny that once things lift the queues will form again outside multinational retailers (this still supports local jobs) however we can still see that consumer habits are changing. Yes, Amazon is here to stay, but with uncertain custom charges and longer delivery dates, shopping at home has become more appealing, if not more reliable. Is it something we really need that we can’t just find at home or even an alternative.
Consumers spend over €5 billion online each year and more than two thirds of that goes overseas. If we spend the money locally and support Irish business, the money stays in the economy, jobs are created, income increases and our local communities benefit. However the responsibility also lies on companies to stock Irish.
Is this change here to stay? Has the lockdown made us more aware of shopping Irish and supporting local?
Irish companies also have a responsibility to stock Irish and be part of the supply chain to get these amazing Irish products into the homes of consumers. Two Irish dentists and sisters from Galway created Spotlight Oral Care in 2016 with the aim to create the best oral health products, to educate and promote oral care, empowering people to engage with true customised preventative oral care.
Not only did they identify a gap in the market for effective oral care products they also identified the lack of sustainability in this sector with billions of toothpaste tubes sitting in landfill each year. To tackle this issue they make their toothpaste tubes from sugar cane making them the world’s first ever 100% recyclable tube.
